About
About 529 College Savings Growth Calculator
This calculator answers one question: if you keep saving at your current pace, will you have enough when your child starts college? It grows your savings forward to the enrollment age, grows the cost of college by the same number of years, and compares the two. You see the projected balance, the projected cost, the percentage funded and the dollar shortfall.
Start with your child's age and the age they will enroll, 18 by default. Then choose In-State, Out-of-State or Private to load a starting four-year total of $105,000, $175,000 or $230,000, and change that figure to match the schools you have in mind. Add your current savings, your monthly contribution, an expected yearly return (7% by default) and a yearly tuition inflation rate (5% by default).
The math is plain compounding. Your balance and your monthly deposits earn the return you enter, compounded monthly, until enrollment. The cost rises by the inflation rate once a year. The tool also splits your final balance into the money you put in and the growth it earned. Over ten or fifteen years, small changes to the return or the monthly amount move the result a lot, so try several scenarios.
Know the limits. The tool raises today's cost up to the first year of college and doesn't keep raising prices during the four years you pay them, so real bills may run higher. It covers one child, ignores scholarships and financial aid, and stops adding deposits at enrollment. The tax figure is a rough estimate that assumes a flat 15% tax on investment growth. Your real savings depend on your state, your tax bracket and the account you use.
A 529 plan is a US savings account whose growth is tax-free when you spend it on qualified education costs. Federal rules also let you use up to $20,000 a year of 529 money on K-12 tuition starting in 2026, and let some unused funds roll into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, up to a lifetime limit. State rules differ, so check your plan. Everything you enter stays in your browser, and the tool doesn't save it.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What should I enter for today's cost?
Enter the total for all four years at the type of school you expect: tuition, fees, housing and books. The presets are rough starting points, so replace them with figures from the cost pages of the schools you're considering.
What return and inflation rates should I use?
There's no single right number. The defaults are a 7% return and 5% tuition inflation. Lower the return for a cautious portfolio, and test inflation at both lower and higher rates. Running three scenarios gives you a range instead of one guess.
What do percent funded and shortfall mean?
Percent funded compares your projected balance at enrollment with the projected cost. At 60%, your savings would cover about 60% of the estimated four-year bill. The shortfall is the projected cost minus the projected savings. If you're short, raise the monthly amount or add a lump sum and watch the number change.
Does the calculator include the 529 tax benefit?
It shows a rough estimate of tax saved by assuming a flat 15% rate on your investment growth. Your actual benefit depends on your income, your state and the kind of account you'd use otherwise.
Can 529 money pay for more than college?
Yes, within limits. Qualified costs include tuition, fees, books and room and board for college. Since 2026, federal rules also allow up to $20,000 a year for K-12 tuition per student, and some leftover money can roll into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary under a lifetime cap. Your state plan may set its own rules, so confirm with your plan provider.
Is this financial advice?
No. It's an estimating tool that works from the numbers you enter. Talk to a licensed advisor or your plan administrator before you make decisions about investments or taxes.
