About Barcode Generator

A barcode generator converts numeric or alphanumeric data into a pattern of lines a scanner can read instantly, far faster and more reliably than a cashier or warehouse worker typing a long SKU by hand. This free barcode generator handles the formatting rules behind common barcode standards, so whether you're labeling retail products or tracking internal inventory, the output scans correctly on standard hardware.

Free, no sign-up

Different formats serve different purposes. UPC-A, the familiar 12-digit code on most North American retail products, includes a check digit calculated using a modulo-10 algorithm, which lets a scanner detect a misread instantly rather than accepting corrupted data. Code 128, by contrast, handles full alphanumeric strings and is common in internal warehouse and logistics systems where flexibility matters more than adhering to a strict retail standard.

A scanner also needs a clear "quiet zone," blank space with no printing, on either side of the barcode to read it reliably. Printing a barcode too close to a label's edge or over a busy background pattern is one of the more common, and easily avoidable, reasons a technically correct barcode still fails to scan.

Enter your SKU or inventory number and adjust settings like bar height and width to fit your label size. The preview updates immediately, and once it looks right, download a high-resolution image file suited for printing directly onto product labels.

For actual public retail sale, the number encoded needs to be an officially registered GS1 number, this tool generates the scannable graphic from whatever number you provide, but it can't manufacture a legally valid retail registration for you. For internal tracking, you can invent your own numbering system freely. The tool loads its barcode library from a public CDN, then draws the barcode in your browser. We never receive or save the numbers you enter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the real difference between a barcode and a QR code?

A barcode is a one-dimensional pattern of vertical lines, typically storing a short numeric string like a SKU. A QR code is two-dimensional and can hold considerably more data, including full URLs or contact details, in a much smaller visual footprint.

Will a barcode made here actually scan at a store checkout?

Yes, provided the number you're encoding is a legitimate, registered GS1 barcode number for your product. This tool renders the scannable graphic correctly from whatever number you give it, but it can't generate a legally valid retail number on your behalf.

Can I use this for internal warehouse tracking instead of retail?

Absolutely, for internal use you can create your own numbering system entirely and generate matching barcodes to track stock within your own facility, no official registration needed.

Why is my printed barcode failing to scan?

The most common causes are printing too small, compressing the image too heavily, or not leaving enough blank "quiet zone" space around the barcode. Download the highest resolution available and print with solid dark lines on a plain white background for best results.

Does the tool store the SKU numbers I generate?

No. The tool draws each barcode in your browser, and we never receive or store your inventory numbers or product codes. It does load its barcode library from a public CDN when the page opens, and that request does not include your numbers.

What file format does the barcode download as?

Typically a PNG or JPG image file, both of which are broadly compatible with label printing software, Word, and standard design applications.
